Introduction

The community-based services in CSI module for SABD are to expose students to the real community living in the real life situation. Students are required to incorporate the theory they have learned at school into real life environment and problems. The intention is to reveal the students to the real community and work together as a team for architectural, culture and environmental enhancing activities in the communities of different social economic status and social groups.

Week 1

The first day of the module started off with an introduction to the module given by Ms Ann. A project brief was then introduced to us and we were tasked to form a project group. This was exciting as this is the first time this architecture course has assigned us to design and create something beneficial for the community using the knowledge we had learnt as architecture students. I had formed a group with Pau Jin Wei, Raveender Singh, Muhammad Faidh, Dayang Nadrah, Nurul Shahira binti Muhammad Ali Kuan, Nur Iman Jezdmeen and Sumedha Sanjay Singh.

Week 2

On the following day, a detailed was entrusted to us, where the given service options were Charitable Homes or Organizations,  Community Centers, Street Communities or a diversity Project. The director of ZLG Design, Mr. Huat Lim, as one of its main coordinators, briefed us on the diversity project . The Introduced site in question was Perumahan Awam Sri Tioman 1 in Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur,  a people's housing project (PPR) flat. The aim of the project was to generally rejuvenate the area, by improving the overall quality of the residents' lives such as providing a facility that caters to the overall community needs.

Later In that week, my team and I visited the site for the first time and conducted interviews with the community and we managed to come up with the idea of mural painting this is because we saw the surrounding environment  dull and unlively, for those teams who involve in this DiverseCity project, we were all gather and do pegboard setting at the ground floor of Block 32 and also some site measurements around the area.

The purpose of the pegboard was a moodboard to let the residents in Sri Tioman1 understand that the DiverseCity project is doing some changes around their living area.  So that, the residents can feel some fresh ideas and belonging to the new facilities.

Week 3

After attaining all the information, the pegboard was installed. Simultaneously, another meeting was arranged, held at ZLG Design in Tommy Le Baker, together with Datin Sunita and us Taylor’s university students contributing to the community. During the meeting, we also presented our site analysis and our development on the previous ideas to the PPR team.  We had thought of a concept of decorating the zone by drawing informative murals and in addition plant some vegetation to compensate for the poorly unkempt site to attract and educate people to appropriately discard thee disposable items.

Week 4

Tutorial session was held with Ms Lee on the site. Our proposal for urban farming was rejected but interactive mural was accepted and can be proceeded to the next stage which is designing the layout.

This week, we concentrated on the development of our initial ideas and bringing it to the final stage. We kept improvising our ideas to submit a full compilation for review to the PPR for them to study our design and understand our intention and check the fulfillment of the requirement.

Week 5

Week 6

A gathering was held at ZLG headquarters, whereby all groups were expected to display their work up until this point. My group gave an introduction on our proposition and it was generally welcomed. We likewise figured out how to collect input from the entire participants in regards to our proposition.

Week 7

Submission of Proposal.

Week 8 & 9

Again, the review from PPR and the feedback was not as bad. we accepted new members to join our group as their group's  proposal was rejected and our group combined creativity to create a more creative and interesting mural.

Week 10 & 11

In this week, we start our wall design on 1:1 scale paper board at the site with some help from the community and improve our relationship with the community. Presentation to PPR on site.
